Situated high on the edge, 300 meters above the Urubamba River, the great Inca city of Machu Picchu is one of the most emotional areas of a devastated city anywhere in the world. Almost as great as the fossils themselves are a spectacular array of towering, rich, evergreen mountains.

Hiram Bingham passed through Machu Picchu in 1911 and accepted it until it passed as the "Lost City of the Incas," first recorded by Spanish troops in the 1500's. Nevertheless, historians accept that the real lost Inca city was in Espíritu Pampa, a ruin that Bingham knew was limited and insignificant.
